Everything You Need to Know About Spa Pumps

Posted by Kris Kemp on

Are you in the market for a hot tub or spa pump? Pumps are an essential part of your spa, and there is more to them than you might think. Most Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs have two separate pumps, for circulation and jet power, and select models even have up to three jet pumps! These power the jets by pulling water through a filter and then pushing it out the jets in our signature 50/50 air-to-water ratio. Circulation pumps pull water through a separate filtration system, treat it with UV light, heat it up, and push perfectly warmed, crystal-clear water back into the hot tub. Here are some elements you’ll want to consider when shopping for the perfect spa pump.
Jet Power
The horsepower controls the pressure of the water coming out of the jets. The more jets you have, the more horsepower you will need. Keep in mind that higher horsepower doesn’t always mean a better spa; jet placement and design are important to consider. In hot tubs with more than one jet pump, there is a diverter knob that allows you to redirect the jet power to particular seats. Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs use top-of-the-line engineering to create cost-effective systems with flow control and the right amount of jet power for each hot tub model.

Speed
Traditional spa pumps are one-speed or two-speed, depending on how many levels of jet power the spa has. If your spa uses the same pump for circulation and jet power, you’ll want a two-speed pump that you can set at a very low level to circulate the water when the tub is not in use. However, many modern tubs have separate circulation pumps to keep the water sparkling. For the newest technology in spa pumps, consider a variable-speed pump, which uses a type of motor similar to that used in hybrid cars. These are typically quieter and produce less heat and vibration, resulting in reduced wear and tear and a longer lifespan.

Energy Use
With growing concern about energy use in all facets of life, Jacuzzi® Brand has been producing a variety of new hot tub features. First-class insulation, LED lights, and expertly engineered jets are just some of our latest design innovations. Programmable circulation pumps filter the water efficiently, and some even reduce energy usage by transferring motor heat to the water. For jet power, variable-speed pumps are a great option for energy savings—because they can be set to any speed, they are more efficient than set one- or two-speed pumps.
