The surprising benefits of cold water immersion
The idea of plunging into ice-cold water might sound daunting, but the rewards are truly remarkable. Studies have shown that cold water immersion, particularly before training, can enhance the body’s production of growth hormones, contributing to muscle recovery and growth. Moreover, it has been linked to increased testosterone levels, leading to improved vitality and performance.
Beyond boosting growth hormone secretion and increasing testosterone levels, cold water immersion aids in muscle recovery by reducing inflammation and soreness after intense physical activity. The cold water constricts blood vessels and reduces blood flow to muscles, which helps remove waste products and reduce inflammation.
But cold water immersion doesn’t just offer physical benefits, it also offers a wealth of mental wellness advantages. It acts as a natural mood booster, reducing stress and anxiety while increasing mental sharpness and focus. Moreover, the practice has been associated with improved sleep patterns and enhanced resilience to various illnesses.
1. Muscle Recovery and Growth:
During intense physical activity, our muscles undergo microtraumas that require repair. Cold water immersion in ice baths aids in reducing inflammation and muscle soreness, facilitating faster recovery and promoting muscle growth. By enhancing growth hormone release, ice baths become a powerful ally for athletes and fitness enthusiasts seeking to optimise their training and performance.
2. Anti-Aging Effects:
Cold water immersion can tighten the skin and reduce puffiness, resulting in a more youthful and radiant appearance. Also, growth hormone plays a significant role in maintaining muscle mass, bone density, and skin elasticity. As a result, ice baths' ability to stimulate growth hormone release can contribute to reducing the visible signs of ageing, providing a natural approach to maintaining youthfulness.
3. Metabolism and Weight Management:
Exposure to cold activates brown adipose tissue, commonly known as “brown fat,” which plays a role in burning calories for heat production. This can aid in weight management and energy expenditure. Additionally, another aspect of growth hormone’s influence lies in its role in regulating fat metabolism. Through its action on fat cells, growth hormone helps to break down stored fat for energy. This can have positive implications for weight management and body composition.
4. Immune System Support:
Cold water immersion is thought to stimulate the production of white blood cells, enhancing the immune system’s response to infections and diseases. Regular exposure to cold water has been linked to reduced frequency and severity of illnesses. Growth hormone, which is increased by regularly partaking in cold water immersion also plays a pivotal role in supporting the immune system. By promoting the production and function of immune cells, it strengthens the body’s defence mechanisms, enhancing its ability to fight off infections and illnesses.
5. Cognitive Enhancement:
Growth hormone receptors are found throughout the brain, indicating their influence on cognitive function and memory. Some studies suggest that increasing growth hormone levels by means such as cold water immersion may have a positive impact on brain health.
6. Improved Circulation:
Cold water immersion causes vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels) followed by vasodilation (expansion of blood vessels) when re-warming occurs. This cycle improves blood circulation, promoting cardiovascular health.
7. Mental Resilience:
Cold water immersion has a powerful impact on mental wellness. The shock of cold water triggers the release of endorphins and other neurochemicals, reducing stress and promoting a sense of well-being.
8. Mood Elevation and Depression Relief:
The release of endorphins and increased norepinephrine levels during cold water immersion can alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.
9. Improved Skin Health:
Cold water immersion can tighten the skin and reduce puffiness, resulting in a more youthful and radiant appearance.
10. Enhanced Lymphatic System Function:
Cold water immersion helps to stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid, facilitating the removal of toxins from the body.
What is the optimal water temperature for cold water immersion?
While the optimal temperature for cold water immersion is generally between 10°C to 15°C, some individuals may find even colder water, such as 3°C, to be more beneficial. The colder temperatures elicit a more profound response from the body, triggering increased activation of the sympathetic nervous system. This heightened response may further enhance the release of hormones, such as norepinephrine, leading to increased alertness and focus.
Wim hof: championing the cold for personal growth
Wim Hof, also known as “The Iceman,” has become a symbol of human potential through his extraordinary feats and cold exposure techniques. By combining meditation, breathing exercises, and cold water immersion, Hof has unlocked the power of the mind-body connection. Many people have credited his methods with helping them become better versions of themselves, both physically and mentally.
The rise of cold water immersion enthusiasts in the UK.
Across the United Kingdom, individuals have been embracing the practice of cold water immersion to combat illness and elevate their mental health. Interestingly, one doesn’t need an expensive ice bath with built-in refrigeration to experience the benefits. Simply filling a bin with ice-cold water can achieve similar effects.
However, during the summer months, some individuals might struggle to lower the water temperature enough to reap full benefits. As a result, innovative solutions like the Chill Tub, a self-refrigerating ice bath, have gained popularity. With water temperatures as low as 3°C, it offers convenience, water filtration, Ozone sanitation, and an insulated cover for reduced running costs.
The spotlight on cold water immersion
The surge in interest surrounding cold water immersion has attracted media attention, even making appearances on prominent television programs like ITV’s This Morning. Holly Willoughby and Dermot O’Leary recently discussed the growing number of people seeking to improve their overall health and wellness through cold water therapy, with the support of Wim Hof.
The power of combining saunas and ice baths
As more health experts including Dr. Andrew Huberman, discuss the benefits of cold water immersion, the integration of ice baths and saunas has gained traction. The practice of alternating between hot saunas and ice baths, known as contrast therapy, can provide even more significant benefits. This method promotes circulation, aids in recovery, and boosts overall performance.
ConclusionIn conclusion, cold water immersion offers an array of physical, mental, and emotional benefits, elevating our health and well-being to new heights. Thanks to visionaries like Wim Hof and influential health experts like Dr. Andrew Huberman, this practice has gained recognition and continues to inspire individuals to embrace the chill for personal growth and enhanced vitality.

All Jacuzzi® hot tubs go through vigorous testing by CEC (California Energy Commission), and they have found that on average their hot tubs are 22% more efficient than the strict standard’s they set.
Discover here how Jacuzzi hot tubs are energy efficient and how energy efficiency can be maximised with your hot tub.
WHY IS HOT TUB ENERGY EFFICIENCY IMPORTANT?
Incorporating a Jacuzzi® hot tub into your regular wellness routine can open up whole new ways of recovery and relaxation from the relentlessness of daily life, but like any luxury home appliance there is always an energy requirement to consider.
Jacuzzi® have incorporated energy efficiency into all aspects of their design and manufacturing processes to ensure you’re getting optimal performance without unnecessary energy wastage – a key focus of today’s world.
Their SmartTub™ app allows them to get actual real world usage data and on average, our customers use around 6kw per day* to enjoy their Jacuzzi®️ hot tub. To put that into perspective, it is only about the same as a family of 4 taking a 10 minute shower a day.
One of Jacuzzi’s pillars for success is performance, and they have always prided themselves on making products that don’t just provide outstanding hydromassage and health benefits, but also maximise the energy they use, delivering advanced hydrotherapy in an energy efficient way.
It’s always helpful to understand where energy is being used throughout your home and how efficient each device or appliance is. This enables you to monitor costs and help you budget easier so that there are never any surprises later down the line.
*based on 744 privately owned spas in the UK, used throughout 2021 that were fitted with SmartTub™.
THE JACUZZI® APPROACH TO HOT TUB ENERGY EFFICIENCY
According to recent research it has been found that over three quarters (77%) of active Brits experience pain or discomfort while exercising, with knee (28%) and joint pain (20%) proving to be the most common, followed by lower back pain (17%) and pulled calves (16%).
To help you know how to deal with these common injuries, Jacuzzi have teamed up with Hull FC’s Head of High Performance, Paul Hatton and looked at some of those caused by the most popular forms of exercise.
Their findings show that nearly nine tenths (87%) active Brits experience pain or injury caused by workouts, making it the most likely exercise method to knock you off your game.
More than one in five (22%) suffer from hamstring injuries which are caused by overstretching or overtraining the muscle.
Repetitive strain on the joints from explosive jumping and landing mean 18% suffer from knee and ankle problems. With this kind of training, you could become fatigued, increasing the chance of an injury.
Paul says: “The biggest mistake I see in most gym-goers or amateur athletes is that they forget about recovery. People are going into the gym to achieve their goals, but they never remove the stimulus to get ready to go again the next day. If you stimulate the body, then you need to remove that stimulation with rest, as that’s when the body then adapts to handle stimulation better next time.”
Ensuring that you give yourself adequate recovery time will help your body to repair itself but spending time outside of the pool using foam rollers and stretches to increase muscle flexibility, as well as making use of a Jacuzzi® to relieve the strain on the muscles, can also help.
Paul says: “90% of the rehab we do is for joint or back problems. A lot of it is due to lifestyle and how people sit in an office all day without moving, the stiffness that builds up in the muscle over that time is substantial. But many people are not stretching that muscle, or foam rolling to relieve the stiffness, despite adding extra strain when they then exercise.”
Paul adds: “I often say to the athletes that I work with that recovery is huge, but how many people spend time or money on that process? It’s so important to incorporate recovery techniques into your workout regime, no matter what the exercise, but particularly if you’re doing big sessions.”
The type of recovery you should be doing depends on the intensity of your exercise regime, as well as the severity of your pain.
For example, an athlete maintaining vigorous daily training sessions is more likely to require immediate recovery to help prepare the muscles for their next session. A casual gym goer however, can recover by resting in between sessions where needed.
For those looking for a quicker but effective recovery time, hydrotherapy is an excellent option, as it helps to massage the muscles and relieves swelling. This involves the use of water for pain relief and is particularly effective at treating knee and joint pain, while it’s also used for muscle therapy.
Both hot and cold therapy are also effective at treating muscular pain, but work in different ways. Heat therapy increases the blood flow to the affected area, which helps to improve muscle flexibility and can soothe aching joints. Cold therapy reduces the blood flow helping to reduce swelling and inflammation.
Stiffness and sore muscles are common in exercise, however if you do suffer an injury, you should always rest it. Avoid exercising the affected muscles and seek medical help if the pain is severe.
The perfect way to help you recover from your workouts and rest up after injuries is the use of hydrotherapy of a Jacuzzi® hot tub. You can find more information here: hottubvillage.co.uk.
]]>Your Jacuzzi hot tub is a fantastic addition to your home and family and proper maintenance will ensure you get to enjoy it for many years to come. This maintenance includes making the necessary adjustments to keep your spa operating through the cold winter months or shutting it down for a period of time. Here are some guideline for both situations.
Operating Your Spa in Winter
If you are concerned about the cost of operating your spa and its heater in the winter, you can relax; if properly maintained, keeping your hot tub operating is surprisingly cost-efficient. Here are a few simple steps you can follow to prepare your hot tub for winter.
In the winter months there’s nothing quite like watching snow drift down whilst sitting in your lovely warm hot tub. We recommend to keep it operating in the winter and enjoy all the benefits of using your spa.
]]>The Olympian and world champion in both the 5000m and 10,000m track races has had a Jacuzzi Hot Tub installed at his UK home to help improve recovery and drive performance at elite level.
Talking about his training routine he said, “I can’t wait when I stop running, like this morning I did a session on a treadmill – to get in the Jacuzzi…When I come in here, get the massage on, turn the jets on and it feels like the muscles and everything feel a little bit more recovered.”
]]>Jacuzzi® Brands UK, in partnership with Bedfordshire Hot Tubs have announced a collaboration to allow our GB Olympic Swimmers to continue to train at home for Tokyo 2021 during the current UK lock down
As one of the most exciting new partnerships in the ever growing global Jacuzzi® Elite Performance Program, GB Swimmers Adam Peaty MBE, James Guy, Ben Proud, Luke Greenbank, Tom Dean, Anna Hopkins, Sarah Vasey and Jack Burnell have been provided with our popular Reverse Current Swimming Pools, also known as Swim Spa units for their home gardens.
This partnership comes following an ongoing collaboration between Ed Baxter GB swimmer and Director of Ed Baxter Swimming, and Tim Shuttleworth a former GB Olympian sharing top tips for swimmers wanting to improve their swimming techniques.
Fans will have already noticed GB swimmers posting videos of their training through their social media account and updates will continue to be shared in the coming weeks.
Jim Rumley, Owner of Bedfordshire Hot Tubs Limited who retails flume pools called Swim Spas made by Jacuzzi® Brands from within Poplars Garden Centre in Bedfordshire has led the initiative from the beginning and discusses how it all came together:
“At the beginning of March when the Corona virus was just starting to have an effect on our everyday lives, I was talking to a friend of mine, Ed Baxter (a GB swimmer, training in Loughborough) about what was going to happen over the next few months as pools and leisure centres looked like they would soon be closing to keep people safe.
After talking it through we realised, we could use one of my display pools at the store, before it was open to the public, as it’s geared for all swim levels. None of the GB team have a pool at home, unlike the other top swimming countries, as we tend to have houses with small gardens. Without access to a pool they would be at a disadvantage.
Hence the idea grew and after speaking to Andy Bewicke one of the Directors at Jacuzzi® Brands UK, the concept evolved to using a number of stores around the country for other swimmers. Sadly, this awful outbreak accelerated its effect on the world, and by the end of March quite rightly all communal pools were closed and as a non-essential store I closed my site just prior to the lockdown. As I was closing my store I thought why don’t I take a Swim Spa out of my showroom and crane it over their house into a garden so that at least one swimmer could keep training towards Tokyo. The lockdown would be for a number of months and this way someone would be able to swim safely.
Ed being Ed, selflessly suggested I speak with his Coach Mel Marshall about the idea as he knew there were others in the same position. (His training partner is Adam Peaty MBE). Once you speak with Mel, you realise she is one of those very special coaches (totally committed to doing anything she can to help her swimmers reach their goals) and a real person of action.
She explained she was already worried about the effect the lockdown would have, as after about three weeks her top swimmers would desperately need to get back into water so as not to fall behind. But they needed to stay safe in their homes.
After chatting with her she could instantly see how this could help, and hence we started putting a plan together. To be safe we would need Jacuzzi® Swim Spas for each home for up to 6 months so the number quickly grew from the 2 I had, to 8 for all the main medal hopefuls. I then spoke with Andy Bewicke at Jacuzzi® again (he, as always was amazing but must hate my calls by now!) explained the situation, and straight away Jacuzzi® Brands wonderfully agreed to divert a significant quantity of UK stock at that time to help out giving the team a further 6 new Swim Spas on loan.
A couple of days of intense planning and many calls to friends for help, we craned, positioned and installed 8 Swim Spas into 8 back gardens from Plymouth to Chester in 5 days. Looking back it’s weird that it was just a week from when the idea started.
The only reason this was at all possible was thanks to the fantastic team I had of Nick, Anne, Glen, Garth, Paul, Steve, plus contractors who stopped working elsewhere and bent over backwards to help us like Steve, Stuart, Gerry Barry and Dermot. All the swimmers and their families were wonderful in giving us access to their driveways and gardens and being so kind.
On a personal note it just feels good when you see them getting back in the water and doing what they do best.
The current climate is incredibly hard, it’s so important that we stay safe.
All we did was allow 8 swimmers to work from home”.
Adam Peaty MBE added in the Times on 1st May:
“It makes a big difference to be in the water, I can practise my technique just as I can in a big pool and I work on buoyancy and getting high out of the water. It’s a great utility to be able to have use of in these strange times”
Mel Marshall, Head Coach for Swim England also shared her view:
“With the Olympics moved to 2021, we had a window of three weeks where no swimming was going to be ok for the athletes. However, beyond that we needed to somehow find our way to water. However, Jacuzzi® Brands were able to do one better and bring water to us!!! Jim has worked tirelessly over the last week to make this possible and the team will be forever grateful for making this happen. On a personal note the current climate is incredibly hard, and it’s important that we stay safe. To now be able to do this and train at the same time is just incredible.”
Andy Bewicke, Business Development Director for Jacuzzi® Brands in the UK also added:
“This is an amazing collaboration on a number of levels. First and foremost getting our GB Swimmers back in water and training for Tokyo was our number one concern.
We are huge supporters of what these people achieve for the nation and the opportunity to help and become a small part of the journey was incredible. In addition we see it as a valuable opportunity to showcase the training and wellness benefits that our products can create which in turn can help drive performance in the Olympic Swimming Pool. I am excited to see how the collaboration can develop and would like to thank Mel Marshall, Ed Baxter and Jim Rumley for their continued support “

Try to stay in air conditioning as much as possible
A traditional fan doesn’t work to effectively cool the body in extreme conditions. Many areas offer cooling stations during high temperature periods for those without access to air conditioning. Hot days are also a great excuse to head to other A/C-enhanced hot spots like the mall or local library.
Take a warm shower
A warm shower can go a long way to helping you cool off during a heat wave because it keeps the blood circulating in your body. Soaking in a warm hot tub could also help you stay cool in the heat.
Drink water before you feel thirsty
Staying hydrated is important and often the first line of defense when battling hot temperatures, but don’t wait until you’re thirsty during the midst of a heat wave to start loading up on water. Take a preventative approach and begin drinking more when you know consistently hot temperatures are on the way.
Limit outdoor activities
One of the best ways to avoid the health risks of heat is to limit your time spent outdoors during the hottest hours of the day. Even if you are not at high risk for a heat-related health illness, limiting your outdoor activities to the morning and afternoon will be safer for your body.
It’s natural for many people to feel uncomfortable in the heat, but if you start to feel ill or have muscle cramps, it could mean something more serious. Prolonged exposure to heat and humidity can cause heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which are preventable conditions. Be sure to use extreme caution and prioritize your health and well-being during a heat wave.
]]>Mother Nature has remarkable therapeutic powers. All you have to do is step outside into the sunshine and take a few breaths of fresh air to notice how the stress of being in the office seems to float away. Unfortunately, walking to and from the car is about the only time some of us spend outdoors on a regular basis. But if you have a hot tub in the backyard, you can soak in the beneficial effects of the great outdoors along with the amazing effects of hot tub hydrotherapy.
Research studies have shown that being outdoors can reduce stress. Levels of serotonin, the neurotransmitter that works to regulate moods, rise when we are exposed to natural light outdoors, according to an article by Simon N. Young, published in the Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience. The man who coined the term “road rage,” Dr. David Lewis, discovered through research that the scent of grass had a calming effect on frantic drivers. And an article in the New York Times on July 6, 2012, extolled the health benefits of spending more time in nature, including enhanced immune function.
For many of us, the most convenient place to find natural space is right in our own backyards. Soaking in a Jacuzzi hot tub gives you an excellent vantage point for observing your natural surroundings. As you enjoy the beneficial effects of heat, buoyancy and massage, or hydrotherapy, you may experience the benefits of airborne chemicals called phytoncides, volatile substances that defend plants from attacking organisms. “In Taiwan, South Korea and Japan, people commonly engage in so-called forest (or woods) bathing to breathe in phytoncides emitted by plant and trees, in order to improve their health,” according to an article citing a study by the Japanese Society of Biometeorology.
You don’t need a study to confirm the good feelings you get from the sun warming your face on a cool day, gazing up at the stars on a dark night, or breathing in the aroma of pine trees and gentle curves of rising chimney smoke from fireplace logs. Because all of the senses are drawn in, Jacuzzi hot tub owners discover that they have more reasons to spend time in their hot tubs with every change of season.
The well-known health benefits of Jacuzz hydrotherapy: relaxation, tension reduction, arthritis pain relief, and improved sleep, are boosted by the advantages of being in an outdoor hot tub.
This fall, remember the words of the early preservationist and founder of the Sierra Club John Muir, who wrote about being outdoors, “Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you… while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.”
A Jacuzzi hot tub in your backyard makes it easy to reap the rewards of the outdoor life, as well as the benefits of hydrotherapeutic massage.
]]>
Hydrotherapy and hydromassage can be used to relieve the symptoms of a multitude of maladies including stress, arthritis, sleeplessness, fibromyalgia, lower-back pain, post-exercise soreness, and leg cramps/restless legs syndrome.
While most people associate hot tubs with fitness and recovery, research supports the benefits of hydrotherapy for many Conditions, here’s a closer look at these afflictions and how Jacuzzi Hot Tubs can alleviate their harmful effects:
Stress: Stress can originate from any number of life’s facets, including money, work, family, and health. And according to a report by the Mayo Clinic, the long-term activation of the stress-response system can disrupt almost all of your body’s natural processes and put you at increased risk for numerous health problems.1 But just 10 minutes in a Jacuzzi Hot Tub each day can dissolve stress and relieve headaches by increasing blood flow and soothing muscles.
Lower back pain: In a 2012 survey conducted by the American Physical Therapy Association, nearly two out of every three Americans admitted to dealing with discomfort in their lower backs at one point or another. With so many individuals afflicted by this pain, it’s no wonder that the “Journal of Musculoskeletal Research” stated that hydrotherapy offers more potential benefits for those with lower-back pain, in comparison to land-based forms of exercise.
Sleeplessness: If you suffer from bouts of sleeplessness, some time in a Jacuzzi Hot Tub can send you to snoozeville in no time at all. According to the Better Sleep Council, immersing your body in warm water helps create healthy sleep habits by relieving tension and stimulating circulation.2 Plus, when your body is cooling down after a hot tub session, your brain receives subconscious messages suggesting that you sleep.
Post Exercise Soreness: Spending time in the gym can work wonders for your body, but sore muscles the day following an intense session can make movement difficult. That’s why strength and performance coach Jason Lindsay recommends hydrotherapy for every athlete. “From the professional athlete to the college athlete to your weekend warrior one of the most overlooked aspects of a training program for an athlete is recovery,” explains Lindsay. “We recommend hot Epsom salt baths and submerging the body and water. …We get vasodilation and blood flow out to the tissue and recover with no impact. We also use it to build you know a stress relieving protocol…All these different things help us relieve stress improve cognitive function and be at our best.”Restless leg syndrome and leg cramps: Though there remains uncertainty as to the cause behind the unpleasant sensation that millions of people experience in their thighs, calves, and feet, one likely factor is that brain misfires signals to sensory nerves in the lower extremities. Relaxing in a Jacuzzi Hot Tub prior to sleeping can diminish those feelings and while putting your muscles at ease.
Arthritis: Arthritis is a condition that stiffens joints and causes pain for roughly 350 million people on the planet. Heated hydrotherapy, however—such as is offered in a Jacuzzi Hot Tub—has been proven to reduce pain levels in those with arthritis by opening blood vessels, increasing range of movement, and promoting muscle growth.3
Fibromyalgia: A condition that affects the entire body in myriad ways. The disorder is often associated with sweeping musculoskeletal discomfort, but can also negatively impact the mood, energy level, and sleep habits of those coping with it. The Mayo Clinic notes that warm water is effective in treating fibromyalgia, due to its ability to foster relaxation and mitigate muscle tension.4
Spending time in your hot tub or bathtub to enjoy hydrotherapy even if you don't have health issues, can help with one thing that's good for everyone: entertainment and family time.
]]>When you’ve been struck with pain from arthritis, tendinitis, or ailments from injuries, water therapy can provide relief. The warm water, especially when coupled with jetted massage, can help decrease muscle tension and soothe sore joints, alleviating the pain.
Water Therapy for Recovery Time
An essential but often forgotten part of living an active lifestyle is spending time to recover. You don’t need to wait for pain or a strain to start using water therapy; taking time to soothe your exerted muscles before you need it plays an important role in avoiding muscle fatigue. Heated water encourages blood circulation and improves blood pressure all while relaxing your body. You can also trade your post workout stretch for a cold hydromassage that will trigger your metabolism and boost your immune system and dodge discomfort before it strikes.
Take Your Workout to the Water
If you have lived an active lifestyle for a long period of time and have reached a plateau, or simply want to try something new, taking your workout to the water may be your answer to spruce up your routine. Simple aerobic exercises in moving water can help build balance and resistance. If your go-to work-out is yoga, you can incorporate water therapy by trying out some of the same moves in moving water. Or, on days when your energy is low and your body is fatigued, simple movements such as water walking can help you recover your joints and muscles for your next work out due to the water buoyancy.
Unwind in Water
The most vital part of a healthy lifestyle is to keep a balanced state of mind. Finding ways to minimize stress can help you improve your quality of life and truly achieve a healthy life style. Incorporating 5-10 minutes of cold or hot water therapy a day can help you de-stress and release endorphins in your body, giving you a boost to reach a happy and healthier state of mind.
With so many methods – and trends -- of hydrotherapy and water therapy available, be sure to seek the guidance of a medical professional to figure out which one will best fit your life style. Whether you’re taking the first steps to living a healthier lifestyle or you are looking for new health tips, incorporating water therapy to your routine can lead to an improvement in mental and physical health. You’ll also be part of health routine that never goes out of style.

Hot tub chemistry
As hot tub water is warm, its chemical balance is constantly changing and the measured application of water balance chemicals will keep your hot tub water clean and free from harmful bacteria for longer. That is why hot tub owners must ensure they monitor for any changes in the chemical balance of the water and act appropriately. Some common questions we’re asked about hot tub chemicals are:
What is a hot tub sanitiser?
A sanitiser is a disinfectant chemical used to kill bacteria that evolves within hot tub water, keeping it safe for bathers. There are two popular sanitisers used to protect the water within hot tubs, which are chlorine (the stronger of the two) and bromine and are available as granules & tablets. If you’re a hot tub owner with sensitive skin, then the use of bromine or even oxygen, a less popular sanitiser, are recommended.
What is pH?
The pH scale works from 0-14 with 7 being neutral, anything below 7 is classed as acidic while anything above 7 is considered an alkaline. For hot tubs, the term pH is a scientific way of describing whether your water is acidic or alkaline with the ideal pH for hot tub water is between 7.2 - 7.6 with large variations outside this range, either way, can have detrimental effects.
What is hot tub shock?
Without getting into the chemistry of it there are four main reasons you need to shock your hot tub water with either chlorine or non chlorine shock. Firstly it can be used to remove organic compounds after heavy use. A great example is to treat cloudy water. The second is to kill bacteria. This is only applicable if you use a chlorine shock treatment. Another is to create more 'free' chlorine and bromine. As your sanitiser works it 'sticks' to bacteria in the hot tub which means it can no longer be 'active' to remove any more. A weekly shock treatment will remove bromamines or chloramines so they can be caught by the filter. Finally, it reactivates bromides so that they work more affectively to kill the bacteria.
Hot Tub chemical safety
Below are some important tips when using Hot Tub chemicals:
|
How to Shock Your Hot Tub The shocking process is relatively easy and can easily be done yourself without the help of a professional. All you have to do is add the shock and let it work its magic. To shock your hot tub, simply follow these easy instructions: 1. Adjust the pH levels of your spa’s water to between 7.2 and 7.6. 2. Remove the hot tub cover so your spa can breathe while being shocked. 3. Turn off the air to the jets but leave the circulation pump running so the water is moving but is not too agitated. 4. Measure the amount of shock you need for the number of gallons of water in your hot tub. Check your shock’s label instructions to find this information. 5. Add the shock to your hot tub carefully. If you’re outside, be extra cautious as high wind could blow the shock right in your face. |
When Is It Safe for a Soak after Shocking? |
There is no hard and fast rule about when you should get into your hot tub after you have shocked it. Test the water. Check the bromine levels are within 4-6mg/l or for chlorine 3-5mg/l, then it is safe for a soak. How long it will take for the chlorine levels to reach this depends largely upon how much shock you used. In some cases, it can be only 20 minutes to an hour after shocking, in other cases 12 hours, while still others you should wait a day. Check your shocks instructions to see when it says it is safe and test your water before you decide to take a dip just to make sure it is safe. |

Why not begin each day seemingly refreshed with a “bubbly” attitude. Stay on the go and leave the minor aches and pains at home.
Let’s start with Hydrotherapy
Warm water or “hydro” therapy can promote relaxation, pain relief and improved sleep habits as the heat, buoyancy and massage work together to clear your mind, reduce stress and soothe overworked muscles. Heat improves circulation and warms muscles and joints. Buoyancy lifts the pressure of weight from joints and muscles. Hydro massage stimulates muscles, healing and soothing soreness, which also helps to ease pain surrounding joints.
Hydro massage has many pain-relieving benefits. It reduces pain levels in those with arthritis by opening the blood vessels and increasing range of movement, and reduces muscle tension and overall discomfort resulting from fibromyalgia. For those who suffer from lower-back pain, Research found that hydrotherapy provides more potential benefits when compared to land-based exercises.
And Relax
People have always been naturally drawn to water as a source of comfort, the soothing sounds of a bubbling brook, the relaxing steam of a natural hot spring. Water therapy in a Jacuzzi Hot Tub combines all the best calming features of water. Opening the blood vessels to improve circulation, relaxing the muscles and providing an escape from the pressures of daily life.
The Horrible Post-Workout Soreness
Exercise is important for health and well-being, but no one wants the sore, overworked muscles that sometimes come along with it. Hydro massage gently warms and stimulates the muscles and joints, speeding up recovery time. Resolve those injuries and muscle pains.
Sleep Is Everything!!
Everyone At Some Point struggles with disturbed sleep. All the benefits of immersing yourself in warm water tension relief, improved circulation and more also help create healthy sleep habits. Raising your internal temperature by soaking in a hot tub two hours before bedtime, and then having your body naturally return to normal temperature after you exit your spa, creates a gentle transition that improves sleep.

We all know that staying active through exercise and diet is important, but while we pound the ground whether running or walking, our poor feet take all the strain and unfortunately for feet, they’re the one body part we tend to pay the least attention to… until now!!
The benefits of a Jacuzzi foot massage
When your feet are under stress, blood flow is limited, so a gentle foot massage can really help to improve circulation. Once stress is relieved through your feet, the flow of blood is increased which really helps to restore tired feet.
A hydrotherapy foot massage can also help to loosen tense compacted muscles, ligaments and tendons that are put under a great deal of stress and pressure on a daily basis. The water and bubbles relieve any pressure stored in the tissues of your feet, helping flexibility and movement to be restored.
As comfort is key, Jacuzzi hot tubs have been designed to allow you to readjust the state-of-the-art PowerPro Jets to target specific body parts, in this instance, feet.
Whether you’re looking for a gentle or a more intense massage, the jets can be aligned to pinpoint specific areas to aid stress relief and relax both you and your feet.
Since ancient times, mankind has taken advantage of the benefits of thermal water. Still today, balneotherapy has been practiced for many caring effects to the human body, from detoxing to rehabilitation. The precious thermal water, irrigating from the root of terrain, passing through the rocks, up to the source, is full of therapeutic properties due to the chemical and physical components it has: minerals and natural heat.
When a human body dives into thermal water, the skin absorbs the beneficial substances and at the same time toxins are removed through sweating and the natural acceleration of the bloodstream. All of which purifies the body. The heat of the water enhances the heartbeat rate and the levels of oxygen in the blood, which promotes better circulation and cellular oxygenation. This process brings benefits not only to the heart and other vital organs, but also to the body tissue. Moreover, the heat relaxes muscles and releases tension, effectively relieving stress-related diseases and helping promote sleep. For the same reasons, stress on the joints is reduced as well: arms and legs in the water can move more fluidly, and gain better flexibility.
Now imagine that all the historical benefits of thermal water was to be merged in one of the most innovative ways for body care in the latest times. Imagine that the global leader in hydrotherapy was to design a product combining balneotherapy and hydrotherapy.
Today Thermal H2O® is born, a whirlpool bathtub collection designed by Jacuzzi® to enhance the benefits of thermal water.
Jacuzzi® has been working for years to improve the therapeutic effects of hydrotherapy, and now it has engineered a system using air and water streams, ergonomically designed and positioned, to precisely stimulate different body parts. The possibility to regulate the direction of jets is only one of the many features that differentiate Jacuzzi® bathtubs in terms of customization and the effectiveness the treatments. Thermal H2O® bath tubs are realised through Aqualibrium® technology: jets that perfectly balance air and water, free to be oriented and regulated, and can massage specific areas of the body.
Such as other Jacuzzi® products, Thermal H2O® is born after incredible amounts of research: the products not only perfectly adapts to thermal waters, but it can also optimise their effects. Their therapeutic properties, the benefits of minerals and the natural heat of thermal water are enhanced thanks to the targeted activity by the air and water jets, which operate where the pain or the muscular tensions are.
Thermal H2O® by Jacuzzi® is an elegant and enduring designed whirlpool bath tub collection thanks to the construction materials ensuring the protection from the erosive action of thermal waters. It also delivers a warm and comfortable feeling because it has been designed starting from the human body, which has always been the centre of every product by Jacuzzi®. Nonetheless, Thermal H2O® is also surprisingly silent, because it has been designed to ensure an experience of absolute comfort.
Thermal H2O® is a revitalizing, relaxing and unheard-of experience.
A new moment of wellness by Jacuzzi® is born: Thermal H2O® bathtub collection.
